Meet Nineline Director, Gil Ortiz

Q. What are the most common problems young people call the Nineline with?

A. The most common problems young people call with are family problems and interpersonal relationships (peer problems). Also, young people calling with concrete needs such as food, clothing or shelter. Those three: concrete needs, family problems, and interpersonal relationships are the biggest issues young people call us about.

Some trends are that substance abuse problems and mental health issues are becoming a bigger issues for callers. The biggest mental health issues are depression and anxiety. We saw a rise in these two after 9/11.

Q. What do you see as the role of the Nineline?

A. I see the Nineline as a lifeline for youth and families that need immediate assistance regarding a crisis and a sympathetic ear for youth and families dealing with on-going difficulties in their lives.
